How does Cambly work?
Here's how to get started in four steps.
1. Find your online English tutor
Browse thousands of native English-speaking tutors from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and beyond, many with graduate degrees from top universities. Every tutor is reviewed and approved by Cambly before their first lesson.
Filter by accent to practice with an American, British, or Australian speaker. Filter by the other languages your tutor speaks (Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French, Arabic, or Turkish, among others) so you always have a fallback when you get stuck. Or search by professional field, from business and technology to healthcare and finance, and find someone who already speaks the language of your industry.
2. Book your first English lesson
Choose a tutor and start a 30-minute one-on-one lesson. Call instantly if you're ready now, or schedule a time that fits your week, from your browser or the Cambly app on iOS and Android. In your first lesson, you and your tutor talk through your goals and current level, so your learning is personalized from the start. Afterward, your tutor may share a quick summary or talk through what to focus on next time.
3. Choose the English learning plan that fits your goals
Small Groups — a lesson with up to 3 people (1 tutor and up to 2 students), so you build speaking and listening with a mix of native English speakers and other accents. It includes unlimited pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary activities.
Private+ — one-on-one lessons with native English-speaking tutors, built for real-life conversation practice. It adds lesson recordings and transcripts, automated feedback after every lesson, access to all Cambly Courses, and Small Group lessons whenever you want to mix things up.
Pro — everything in Private+, plus exclusive access to Cambly Pro tutors, who build a structured, goal-oriented plan around you: business English, exam prep like IELTS or TOEFL, pronunciation, or interview preparation. You get targeted feedback from your tutor and self-study recommendations after every lesson.
Choose 1, 2, 3, or 5 lessons a week with Private+ or Pro, or 1 to 2 lessons a week with Small Groups. Every lesson is 30 minutes, so you can build a practice rhythm that fits your schedule.
Pause, upgrade, or switch tutors anytime.
4. Track your progress, lesson after lesson
Your tutor gives you real-time feedback during each lesson and meaningful corrections afterward, so you understand what was wrong and why.
Between lessons, keep learning with personalized practice activities built from your own conversations, right from your dashboard. With Private+ or Pro, you can revisit each lesson through Lesson review, rewatching your recordings and seeing what to focus on next, so your grammar and vocabulary keep improving over time.
Questions fréquemment posées
Is an online English tutor worth it?
Yes, if what you need is speaking practice rather than more input. A tutor gives you live correction and a real person to respond to, which apps and videos can't. Whether you're brushing up on conversational English for school, gearing up for a big project at work, or relocating to an English-speaking country, every lesson is tailored to your goal and your level, from beginner to advanced.
Because every Cambly tutor is a native speaker, you get insight into culture and phrasing alongside the grammar, without a commute or a fixed class time. Choose how many lessons you take each week to fit your schedule and your budget, and work with a private English tutor who matches what you need.
Can you take English lessons from your phone?
Yes. Every Cambly lesson happens over live video chat, in your browser or on your phone, so you can practice English anywhere. During your lesson, you and your tutor can share your screen, take notes, draw on a whiteboard, and use built-in translation tools and subtitles to work through anything you don't understand in the moment.
Should you work with one tutor or several?
Many learners find it helpful to meet a few different tutors before settling in. Comfort builds confidence: the more at ease you feel with a tutor, the more willing you are to speak up and try new things. Different tutors bring different strengths, too. Some are great with grammar or exam prep, others are natural conversationalists, so having two or three favorites means you can match the right tutor to what you're working on that day. With Private+ or Pro, once you've found your favorites, you can lock in weekly lessons with them for as long as your subscription lasts, even with more than one tutor at a time.
How long does it take to learn English?
Learning English is a gradual process, and how long it takes depends on where you're starting from. Based on Cambridge English's guided learning hours framework, reaching a conversational level (B1) typically takes 350 to 400 hours of guided study, while reaching an advanced, near-fluent level (C1) takes 700 to 800 hours. With a Cambly tutor guiding your practice and giving you real feedback every lesson, most learners start having genuine conversations well before they reach those totals. Consistent, guided practice matters more than hours alone.
How do you choose an online English tutor?
Start with what you need English for, then filter for it. If you're preparing for work in a specific field, a tutor with professional experience in it will already know the vocabulary. If you want to sound natural in a particular accent, you can filter for that too. If you're a beginner, a tutor who speaks your first language can explain things when you get stuck.
The other half is fit, and that's harder to judge from a profile. Watch the intro video and read a few reviews before you book. Comfort matters, because you learn faster with someone you're willing to make mistakes in front of.
Many learners end up with two or three favorites rather than one. That gives you more times to choose from, and different tutors bring different strengths.
