Joe
Hello!
Hello there! I'm Tutor Joe and I'll be helping you master English in the American dialect! I'm willing to work with English language students of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of your current English-speaking abilities. I was born and raised in the southwestern part of the United States, but I have lived all over the US and I've spent a considerable amount of time traveling, living, and working overseas, including Europe and the Middle East. I've had many interactions with people from all walks of life, especially those with Hispanic and Arabic backgrounds. I love meeting with and speaking to people from all over the world and learning about their culture, so much so that I obtained degrees in international politics, strategic and Middle Eastern studies, and chose to work in the maritime logistics industry so that I could travel abroad. I want you to know that I do not consider helping students learn English as a job, but an opportunity to make a difference in your lives by opening up new doors for you within the English-speaking world. I am honored that you have a desire to learn my language and I really look forward to working with and learning from you as well!
I was born in Texas, but raised in New Mexico (USA). I've lived in 10 different states, from California to Maine; traveled to 25 foreign countries and territories; and lived overseas for 4 years in both Spain and the Kingdom of Bahrain. In addition to traveling and meeting new people, I enjoy alpine skiing, rowing, going to the beach, reading (of course :), mosaic art, and gardening...though my gardening skills are somewhat lacking.

Teaching Style
I'd like our sessions together to be fun and engaging! I generally like to keep the subject matter light, but we can attempt more complex English language conversations if a student wishes to do so. When I first meet students, I will assess their English-speaking ability in order to determine what language level we should begin with, and progress in a logical order from there. Occasionally, we may find ourselves jumping from one topic to another, and that's ok! We'll see where the conversation takes us and adjust our course from there. Sometimes students might want to know more than conversational English, and want to learn how to write and read in English. I absolutely love reading books and articles with my students, so we can work on that too, if you like. Reading books and articles drives discussion. It's a great way for learners to increase their English vocabulary and acquire different styles of speaking and writing. If there is a particular subject you would like to focus on, I can help you navigate through it. I don't want students to be intimidated by me, I want to help them as much as I can, and I want to try and keep conversation and activities fun and fluid so students walk away feeling confident, that they actually learned some new language skills, and that they had a very enjoyable experience with me during their session. Many foreign language learners are sometimes reluctant to speak in the language they are learning because they're afraid of making mistakes. They don't need to be afraid of making mistakes with me. I'm expecting you to make mistakes as this is how you learn! I'm going to make mistakes too, but we will make (and overcome) them together.
