Hello!

Hi, I'm Karyn and I live in Sydney. I studied English at university and intended to teach but life doesn't always go to plan! I spent many years in the public service, as a carer for my elderly mother, while raising my son. I've also been a volunteer, teaching reading skills in local schools. Now I am pursuing my passion for English again. I’ve obtained my TESOL certificate and have been teaching English to migrants whilst continuing to volunteer in schools. I have also started a small private tutoring business helping children, from non-English speaking backgrounds, with their school English studies. I married later in life, so I still have one son living at home. He helps to keep me up to date with technology and social media. As an Aussie, I can offer unique insights into the English language and life and work in Australia. I find the differences between UK and US English quite interesting. Australian English is slightly different again, although overall it is closer to UK English. I love learning about people’s lives, and I really enjoy helping people learn. It’s important to me that we focus on what matters to you in our lessons. I am also naturally patient, encouraging, and kind. My interests include learning about people's lives, current affairs, social issues, and spirituality. I also enjoy studying, gardening, reading, and spending time with my dog, Rosie. In today’s world life-long learning is vital. I welcome all students who are over 18 - from high school students to grandparents! I was involved in ballroom dancing for many years. I loved the music, the dancing and meeting new people. I’ve also tried several sports, including tennis, squash, netball, yoga and volleyball and I follow cricket. I'm very interested in learning about different religions and how people think about religion, spirituality and the big questions in life. I am passionate about social justice issues, mental health issues, gender equality and creating communities where all people are respected and have a chance to thrive. I'm also passionate about the provision of respectful, compassionate and high-quality aged care. I love learning about interesting places and cultures from my students. My husband and I are planning to travel in our retirement so all information will be gladly accepted! As far as life experiences go, I've had my share of challenging times, so whatever your personal situation, I'm sure I can empathise and relate.
