My name is Alan Palmer from Northwest England. I am a 70 year-old retired manager and a language enthusiast. My own foreign languages are Chinese 普通话 (Cambly has featured me on the Chinese platform 小红书, and connecting with Chinese learners is something I really enjoy. 欢迎) I also have been learning ,French(français) for 35 years and German(Deutsch) for 25 years). I also speak a little Spanish (Español) With my years of experience and passion for languages, I'm excited to help you achieve your own language goals! Whether you want to improve your conversational skills, prepare for an exam, plan to travel, or just work on certain areas of your language skills, I'm here for you. Learning a language takes time and practice, but with my guidance and encouragement, I hope that you would feel that you can make good progress more quickly to achieve your personal goals with higher language skills and also have more confidence. As your Cambly tutor, I'll work with you at your own pace, focusing on the areas you need the most help with. I can share my philosophy of language learning. Maybe you will agree with it:- "Be GRATEFUL for the language we have learned in the PAST, be EXCITED for the language we will learn in the FUTURE, and ENJOY using the language we know in the PRESENT". My background in languages: Since 1991 I have been involved with foreign language study and also I have been very active, particularly since 1996, in researching and using the internet for the purpose of language development and in sharing language acquisition ideas with many people from around the world. I have shared many of my own ideas with hundreds of other language learners and also with quite a number of language teachers in other countries (especially teachers of English). Some years ago (in 1999) I was an international chatroom host/administrator. (English/French and English/German) I did this for several hours a week for five years and I spoke and shared ideas on language with many people from a large number of different countries. In 2008 I also had my own online podcast for sharing ideas for language development. Since 2020, I have been holding online regular weekly seminars using the Tencent Meeting application Voov(腾讯会议), as well as using Wechat (微信）with Chinese students of English of all ages. To date (August 2025), I have tutored more than 850 hours of Cambly lessons，and hosted 350 hours of online seminars in English and Mandarin.

Enjoy Every English Experience! I started being a tutor in Cambly in March 2023. In my time with Cambly, I have particularly enjoyed encouraging more than 1000 Cambly students to learn through a mixture of different acquisition and learning techniques and methods. I continue this style and my emphasis is first and foremost what each student’s preferences are for each lesson. My initial focus as a tutor is to encourage students to be relaxed during our sessions in Cambly. I also have some methods to help a student understand their language level, current and future goals. This can be particularly important for students if they are regular students in Cambly and if they have specific goals in mind. I share some enjoyable language development techniques through our conversations, sharing ideas, also Cambly lessons (when required) and/or other externally sourced learning materials. My main way of tutoring students in developing their English language in Cambly is to focus specifically on six key areas (which I describe in detail in my classes) Of course if a student wants also to concentrate on grammar and vocabulary, we can also do that. I believe that to truly understand and become highly proficient in a language, we must also learn more about the culture, history, places where the language is spoken, and how people use the language in real-life situations. Language is not only words—it carries the values, stories, and lifestyles of the people who speak it. By combining these things together, language becomes more interesting and meaningful. Different study methods can help learners improve their English and also understand the world better, becoming more fluent, more confident and open-minded when using the language. I believe it is important for any student to feel some progress after each session regardless of level, even if the lesson is one 30 minute lesson or less. Feedback is very important to me, I provide to each student some feedback after each session, whether the student is newly subscribed to Cambly, or has been developing their English in Cambly for a number of years. Over the last 35 years since I became a language enthusiast, I have made many formal and informal connections with people of all ages, backgrounds and from a significant number of different countries in assisting them to develop their English. I have also made on-going links and communicated with some other language teachers around the world, through face to face meetings, online forums or other types of social media communication.
