Joi
Hello!
Hello! My name is Joi, and I LOVE TEACHING students of all ages! I was born and raised in the northeastern part of the United States. I have been teaching for over 29 years. I have earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Reading Education. I also have a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus on early childhood education. Teaching has been at the center of my life for as long as I can remember (I used to play school teacher as a child). I have taught students from very early childhood levels all the way through graduate school. Local public schools, Head Start centers, daycare facilities, colleges and universities, online as well as overseas are among those places that I have honed my teaching skills and met the most awesome students ever. Irrespective of the level of student that I have taught or am currently teaching, the amount of joy that I receive from seeing a student learn and grow is immeasurable. I also learn from every student whom I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. I hope that we will have the opportunity to meet in the very near future so that we can work and grow together.
Professionally, I am a trained reading specialist. I am skilled at administering and interpreting a wide array of literacy assessments for children and adults. I have also been trained in the Orton Gillingham approach to literacy that focuses on identifying and building on the specific needs/skills of struggling readers over time. Personally, I am a mother, grandmother, daughter, wife, sister and aunt who enjoys a wide variety of activities. I recently earned my black belt in Sanshou mixed martial arts. I also enjoy yoga, hiking, dancing, reading, traveling and just having fun with my family and friends.

Teaching Style
As a teacher, I am laser focused on the specific needs of the students that I am teaching. Consequently, I aim to create a student centered atmosphere in which the student is encouraged to express him or herself freely and feel that is okay to make mistakes (as we all do). Usually these mistakes help us all to learn even more. I firmly believe that there is no one single teaching style that will address every learner. Therefore, I am also very adaptable and can alter my teacher style to match the needs and personality of the students I am charged to teach. If more structure is necessary, then I can provide that. If more freedom and flexibility are needed, then that too can be provided.
