Hello!

Hello there, I'm Orla from Ireland! We start by chatting, you tell me something about yourself, and I listen, ask you more questions. We work on your grammar when it's necessary, we build up your vocabulary, and help you feel confident speaking English. Communication in today's world is important - let's help you communicate effectively! I am perfectly happy to work with anyone, regardless of age, religion, race, sexual orientation, gender, etc. I'm friendly to everyone! Adults and children welcome.

I'm an artist, I like to use drawings in my class. If you can sing, great - songs are fun to use in classrooms, and many of them tell a story. I love stories! I am very health-conscious and take some form of exercise every day - usually a walk, or a couple of hours working in my garden, or some yoga or pilates when the weather is bad. I love talking about food. I'm a little obsessed. Like I said before, I love stories. So I love books and reading, films and television series, and going on road trips to interesting places in Ireland. Every place here has a story ....

Specialties

Teaching Style

I start out informal, relaxed, just chatting. I ask you about yourself, your life, your family, and you welcome to ask me questions too, and when I hear you say something strange - like 'I go England last year', for example, I help you make that sentence grammatically correct: 'I went to England last year'. And then I make you practice it several times. If I know you've learned it, I am a little strict with you. I make you think about what you're saying, and practice using the grammar correctly. The same with pronunciation - if I hear something that's hard to understand, then I will correct you. Then I'll make you practice it. And later, I'll write out the word and make you say it again. I have learned other languages myself, so I know learning all these little things takes time. A quick word about accents: I like accents. I love to hear people speaking English with a little hint that tells me where they are from - it's part of your personality, your culture, your heritage. Accents are lovely! But they DO BECOME A PROBLEM when they are too strong. So if your accent is very strong, we'll take it down a notch or two, and you'll communicate more clearly in English. I speak with an accent - I'm from Ireland, so my accent is very neutral Hiberno-English. And naturally here in Ireland we speak the best English in the world .... ;-D
