List of incidents at independent amusement parks
Sometimes bad things happen at fun places like amusement parks and water parks. These places are full of rides and games. But sometimes, people get hurt or even die because of accidents. This can happen for different reasons.
For example, sometimes the park or the people working there make mistakes. Maybe they do not check the rides well, or they forget to tell people how to be safe. Other times, the people visiting the park do not follow the rules or they do something dangerous on purpose.
Some people might get hurt because they have a health problem they did not know about, like a weak heart. And then there are accidents that just happen, like when someone slips and falls. Nobody plans for these things to happen.
There was a sad story from July 8, 1980, about a 19-year-old man. He was riding a car on a track, but the car flew off and he hit his head on a rock. The park said he worked there because it was a problem if a visitor died. But the truth is, he was not working for the park when the accident happened.
Another sad story happened on August 1, 1982. A man was in a kayak ride and his boat tipped over. When he tried to fix it, he touched something that shocked him. This shock stopped his heart. Other people in his family got shocked too but they were not killed. The park did not think the shock killed the man, but the doctor said it did, even though there were no burn marks.
When people travel to different places, it can help and hurt the places they visit. Tourism can bring more money to these places because travelers spend money there. It also creates jobs and helps the government get more money from taxes. People from different countries can meet and learn about each other's cultures.
But tourism can also be bad for the environment. It can hurt animals and nature, like cutting down trees and making water dirty. Sometimes, to give food and things to travelers, nature suffers more. Also, when there are too many travelers, it can be hard for the people who live there. There can be more sicknesses, traffic, and sometimes people feel worried about these changes.
In 2019, a lot of people traveled to different countries. They spent a lot of money, which helped economies around the world. Most travelers went to places in Europe.
Travelers can make places better by helping to improve healthcare and bringing new and happy experiences to the people who live there. But it's important to think about the good and bad things that come with tourism.
New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission
In New York City, there is a special group called the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). They take care of important old buildings and places. They decide which buildings are important because of their history, their culture, or how they look, and they make these places landmarks. Once a place is a landmark, it is protected and cannot be changed easily.
There are many landmarks in New York City. Some are single buildings and some are whole areas with lots of special buildings. Since the LPC started, they have made more than 37,800 places landmarks.
A mayor named Robert F. Wagner Jr. made the LPC in 1961. The LPC became stronger when a law was made in 1965 that said old buildings need to be saved. The LPC has helped save many famous places like Grand Central Terminal.
Eleven people help run the LPC. They check old buildings, and if a building is 30 years old or more, it can become a landmark. The reason we have landmarks is to keep the city looking nice and to remember the history of New York City. The LPC makes sure that the city keeps its special look and that old, important areas are safe.
