Cecil Holmes

Profession: I have extensive experience both a teacher and a Policy Advisor to the Government in Belfast which is in the United Kingdom. That aspect of my professional life focused on updating the Curriculum and Assessment Processes in all of our Primary and Post-Primary Schools. I was asked to undertake a particular challenge and that was to ensure that what was taught in our schools reflected fully the current and future economic needs of Northern Ireland. As a Policy Advisor, I had the opportunity to influence the curriculum of every young person in my country. Today, those young people, through the enhanced curriculum, being prepared much more effectively for Higher Education and for the World of Work. Teaching English as a Foreign Language has been the central focus of my life during the past decade.

Teaching Experience: My teaching career began in a large High School which catered for students from the ages of 12 - 19. I taught English, Business Studies and Geography. I remained in that school for 20 great years prior to moving to Government Service.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language has always been a great interest of mine. It is so much fun to see non-native speakers become both fluent and confident.

In this capacity, I have been developing teacher training courses in order to enable the local teachers to teach English in a fun but effective way. I, too, teach young people in different settings - individual tutoring, formal classes and young people at University.

Interests: I have a fascination with travelling and learning from other cultures. To that extent I have been travelling extensively in Europe, America and Asia. One my goals is to see more of South America as well as places such as Mongolia and Tibet. But, while I have my health, I plan to continue travelling.

I allow my imagination to flourish through the medium of oil painting.

I love reading and, selectively, watching television, especially News and Documentary Programmes. Additionally, I become absorbed in the many segments about other countries.

I am a fitness fanatic and love nothing better than spending two hours in the gym and running 10k runs or even a half marathon.

Education: I was born on farm not far from Belfast which is in the United Kingdom. As a farmer's son I lived in a rural area where I attended the local Primary School before moving to the local town of Ballymoney to attend Grammar School. After school I took up employment in the Government for two years. However, my vocational calling to become a teacher attracted me to the local University - The Queens University of Belfast. When I started my teaching career I also studied, part-time, for two further Degrees - Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education. I further enriched my professional expertise by undertaking a course in Guidance and Counselling, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Teaching is my passion particularly enabling learners to make amazing progress in the four skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) of English Language competence. The learning process, in my experience, in both fun and rewarding.
